Marathon Key - The Heart of the Florida Keys

Welcome to family-friendly Marathon Keys which is noted for its old Keys lifestyle and seafaring heritage. Marathon is known for its eco-attractions, which include The Turtle Hospital that rescues, rehabs and releases turtles back into Florida waters and The Dolphin Research Center that houses bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions for research and education.

Marathon, on Vaca Key, is the most developed city between Key West and Key Largo and is the gateway to the Seven Mile Bridge on the Overseas Highway. Marathon is also a boating center with a number of standout marinas. Residents, snowbirds and visitors especially enjoy Marathon for its world class fishing, waterfront restaurants and seafood festivals.

Things to See & Do

The Turtle Hospital opened its doors 1986 with four main goals: to rehab injured sea turtles and return them to their natural habitat, to educate the public through outreach programs and visit local schools, to conduct and assist with research aiding to sea turtles, and to work toward environmental legislation making the beaches and water safe and clean for sea turtles.

The Dolphin Research Center through education, research and rescue, promotes peaceful coexistence, cooperation and communication between marine mammals, humans and the environment we share with the well being of DRC’s animals taking precedence.

After working hand-in-hand with countless aquariums to provide the public with access to a wide variety of local fish and marine species, The Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters turned their expertise and enthusiasm for the Ocean into our own Florida Keys Aquarium & Conservation center.

Crane Point Museum & Nature Trail – Crane Point harbors evidence of human use dating back well over seven hundred years. The first documented settlers to this particular property were George and Olivia Adderley who lived here from 1903 until 1949. Sheltered in its tropical forest are numerous rare and endangered species as well as unique archaeological and historical riches. The 63 acres is home to a large thatch palm hammock, a hardwood hammock, a mangrove forest, tidal lagoons, wetland ponds and the fauna that is associated with these various ecosystems.
