Corpus Christi’s rich multicultural history is reflected in the vibrant colors, sounds and tastes of “The Sparkling City by the Sea.” Today, diverse groups and ethnicities — a large Hispanic community, oil crews, military, cowboys, and surfers — lend their distinct flavors and energies to the area.
Colors blaze during unique events such as Fiesta de la Flor, a celebration of the life and legacy of local Tejano artist Selena Quintanilla (April 12-13); Buccaneer Days, a tribute to pirate history with a parade and rodeo (May 2-12); and Dia de los Muertos, a street gala of folk art, music and remembrance (November 2). And for chill seekers, there’s even a Surf & Yoga Festival (May 24-26)!
Celebrations spill onto the beach during Barefoot Mardi Gras with miles of extravagant revelers parading along the crashing surf. Quieter but equally enthusiastic visitors from around the world attend the hatchling releases of the rarest of endangered sea turtles, the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle. The city gained international attention when 60 countries entered the 2018 ISAF World Youth Sailing Championships, the largest youth sailing event for Olympic hopefuls, hosted by the Corpus Christi Yacht Club.
Other unique stops: South Texas Music Walk of Fame, Texas Surf Museum, Mirador de la Flor Monument (Selena’s Seawall), and the USS Lexington Museum where the world’s only aircraft carrier escape room allows 60 minutes to defuse a bomb!
